I'm planning on making this a monthly feature show casing the items I am currently looking for or lusting after. And so, for the month of October......

Wednesday wishlist

Most of you know by now that I am a HUGE fan of Gilmore Girls and I have every series on DVD except number 6 and have been hunting for it for ages, the hunt continues. I rather like the gladiator shoe trend and want both a flat and heeled pair. Whether they go in or out of fashion in the future I like he design and think that they complement my wardrobe and I will be wearing them for a long time. The tulip skirt has been intruging me for some time now and I've been a tad selfconscious to buy one but I have decided so what I like it and will be wearing in or out of fashion so i'm going to gt one :) And finally, a new swimming costume. I have no idea the exact style im going to get, although im leaning towards a two piece, but I'm hoping for something in red. I though this one with the bows was just so cute. So, this is what I am on the prowl for this month, wish me luck :)

Do you have any clothing missions this month? What items are on your must have list?

Everyone's wardrobe is different and unique and everyone's sense of style is just as different and unique. Thus, everyone's list of "essential wardrobe items" should be as different and unique as they are. Here I am going to show you some of my wardrobe basics and essentials items and the different ways I dress them up.

First up is the perenial vest. I am a HUGE fan of vest. Personally I don't own many tee's or the tee's i do own are not basic assuch they have embelishments or funky and different ssleeves. I think it comes from living in a town that is so hot in summer that I veer towards sleeveless basics or layer.

I personally favour a ribbed vest/tank over a solid material alternative and while I am picky about the material I don't spend loads of cash on them. I have one that I bought which is of a high quality and the rest I buy in bulk, 2-3, when I see them in the material that I like as they make up a huge part of the basis of many of my day to day looks.

Look no 1

I personally love this look and am always pairing my vests with my favourite black boyfriend cari I got overseas from Charlotte Russe. My favourite is this look with jeans but it also rocks with a great pair of shorts.

Look no 2

I love scarves and have an extensive collection. Their versatitity is what draws me to them as well their ability to add colour to an outfit and the look with a simple addition.

Look no 3

I am not some one who wears loads of accessories but I think that a fabulou necklace or pair of earings can lift a simple item like a vest and make it an item. Accessorize to distinguish between day and or bussiness and varsity.

Finally I just decide to create a few fun examples of outfits I wear using my key item, the vest.

What do you think of vests and tank tops? Are they something that you have in your wardrobe?

Have an inspirational day

JIMMY CHOO -Project PEP

I stumbled upon this simply by chance and was unbelivably touched. As a psychology student I have beenm exposed to the community and seen and know of the horrors of rape in my country. The rape rate is soaringly high and is perpetuated by ignorance. Many African males diagnosed with HIV/AIDS believe that having sex with a virgin will "cure" them. I encourage all of you to enter and help victims of rape in South Africa.

Jimmy Choo has designed the limited edition, Project PEP Collection to support the Elton John AIDS Foundation and are donating 25% of net sales to the Simelela Rape Centre in South Africa.

Why is 72 the key number for this project?
After exposure to HIV, victims of rape have just 72 hours to visit the clinic and start a course of potentially lifesaving PEP treatment. With funding from Project PEP, the Elton John AIDS Foundation can ensure the clinic remains open day and night, providing 24/7 access for this crucial first treatment.

Help raise awareness and spread this 72 hour message by entering our competition and uploading a photo inspired by 'You, Your Shoes and 72'. You will be in with a chance to win exclusive prizes and the opportunity to be featured in an exhibition at the launch event of Project PEP at Selfridges in London on 29th October.

Please visit the website and enter. Then blog your entries on your site and link back to the website. Help get the word out and help victims of rape.

- VERNON G. BAKER

PROJECT INDEPENDENCE

This past year has been a hard one for me as I planned on it being something completely different to what it turned out and have really been struggling with the sense of failure that has been lingering as a result. This same feeling I feel is what is holding me back from turning what I had left of the year into a success and what is standing in the way of making me feel like I can make next year a success. I am one of those people who has never really failed at things that I have attempted. I've always completed the tasks put before me so when I made plans to go overseas for a year I just assumed that I would be able to do.

Unfortunately, I failed miserably and did not complete my mission. I took a huge risk and in this instance it did not pay off. I was devastated. I tried again and got an amazing job and was all set to leave again and embark on an amazing adventure, however, this time it was logistical problems that kept me from my goal as the particular visa I had was not adjustable.

I can't say that this year has been a complete waste as I have achieved some amazing things:
  • one year anniversary with my boyfriend, we may not have stayed together had I been overseas
  • worked hard and earned a nice sum of money that I have invested and has allowed me to be financially independant
  • enrolled in the most amazing dance school and expanded my dancing repertoire. I live and breath dance.
  • met some really amazing people.
  • and of course starting this blog
And so, the next chapter of my life is almost on me and I have decided to work hard to achieve the most important goal that I will ever have in my opinion, becoming completely and totally independent from my parents. For this particular goal I will be giving myself one year.

DECEMBER 2009 - NOVEMBER 2010

In this year I will do the following:
  1. Get a job that will support me completely with the aim of paying my rent 6 months into the year
  2. Complete my honours degree in psychology and pass with 80%
  3. Change peoples lives with my community and volunteer work
  4. Get a paid internship for after graduation
  5. Apply for and get into my Masters in either America or London
  6. Apply for and qualify for a full bursary for my Masters
  7. Save up enough money for a two month backpacking trip through Europe in 2011
In preparation for this over the next two months i will be:
  1. finding an apartment that comes in under my budget
  2. sending out my resume and applying for jobs
  3. cleaning out my room and throwing away so that I can move everything
  4. working to earn as much as I can so that I can support myself
  5. doing research on different schools and bursaries that I can apply for
Posting all of this here is an extra motivation for me to achieve my goals as I know that all of you will be reading this. I am also going to be posting progress reports every few months to keep myself motivated and on track. I really feel that I need to achieve these goals to prove to myself and my parents that I am a success and not a failure.

I apologize that this is a little bit of an intense post and not along the lines of my usual articles but I feel it is important to myself that I share my story with you. Hopefully I will inspire you and together with the help each other achieve all our goals.

If you have any big goals or life changing decisions that you would like to achieve start your own PROJECT - name it what ever you would like, even the same as mine and leave the link in the comments section or email me so that I can support you in PROJECT.

Tips for Healthy Skin in Winter

Here on this side of the world we are entering into the Spring and Summer months but a lot of you are the exact opposite and so I thought that a this article would be quite useful.

When summer wanes and winter moves in, it's time to take care of your skin in a different way. The burning rays of summer do more damage than in the winter, partially because we tend to wear less clothing, opting for shorts and tshirts over jeans and parkas.

People generally are aware of the need to use sunscreen and drink plenty of water in the summer, but how does winter skin care vary from summer care?

Our skin and mucous membranes dry out a lot more when indoor air is heated in the winter. Plus, the cold outside weather is hard on skin, often leaving it red, chapped, and cracked.

Following are 5 top tips to keep your skin healthy and moisturized during the winter:

- Keep moisturized inside and out. Just because it's winter doesn't mean you should forgo drinking enough water daily. If you prefer, drink herbal teas (non caffeinated since caffeine is a diuretic) or warm water with lemon. They will warm and hydrate you at the same time.

- Switch to a good crème moisturizer. Make sure it is rich in beneficial oils. It will stay on the skin longer, protecting you more. An oil-rich moisturizer will help make up for the reduced oils your skin naturally produces in warmer months. If you have skin problems like eczema, you will probably find it flares up more in the dry winter. Just having dry skin is enough to start us itching, which will be alleviated by a good moisturizer.

- Wear gloves
outside. They will warm your hands and body, plus they will protect your hands from the harshness of the winter that causes red, dry, cracked skin.

- Use sunscreen. In the winter? Absolutely! It isn't just for the summer months. Especially if you go skiing or playing in the snow, you can get very sunburned from reflections off the snow. And UV rays from the sun still make it through our atmosphere. We just tend not to think of it as much in the winter.

- Exercise regularly. Exercise will warm you up and keep your muscles limber. Your skin will keep a healthy glow from the increased circulation and oxygen to your cells. And, exercise will keep your immune system up, which will help you fight off nasty colds and flu.

What are your surefire, tried and tested winter beauty secrets for healthy skin? Do share!

Have an insirational day :)

Handbags and Women - choice or biological destiny

I came a across this article and thought it was quite fun and interesting. A different take on things and it ties up nicely with my previous article regarding Handbag Essentials. Enjoy :)

Handbags have been one of the necessities of life for women ever since recorded history began. It was important to have the items that one used often close at hand and articles found in a purse have ranged from ornate sewing scissors (17th century) to today's mandatory cell phone and credit cards.

Why is it that women carry their belongings around and men just have their wallets? My opinion is that the need to carry something to hold goods is a fundamental need rooted in the biology of females. Who is the main caregiver of the family from prehistory to the present? Yes, I know that traditional roles are gradually evolving but what person in the "traditional" family is the most responsible for taking care of everyone? In most cases, it it the woman who gets people organized and make sure everyone has whatever they need.

Biologically speaking, the female of our species takes care of her offspring and makes sure that all needs will be taken care of once the home is left. I believe that this has evolved into women carrying all that they need and what everyone else could possibly want in their handbag. To illustrate - when you go out with a male friend do you ask him for tissues, pen, or paper? No - you ask another female. Another nuturer is more likely to have some basic necessities than a male.

Am I saying that there is a basic "purse carrying" gene? No - what I am saying is that, biologically speaking, females are the caregivers of the world and have always had this role thrust upon them since the beginning of Homo sapiens. It is our destiny (both physically and psychologically) to make sure that the world is in order. We can't handle the entire planet but we do our best to organize our own particular sphere! Our "caregiving" instincts are attuned to others and, if we fight this destiny, there is a feeling of things not being "quite right" around us. So enjoy carrying your handbag and know that you are making the global community a better place for all!

The Five Handbags of a Women

Like most other females I love handbags...... They can be the crowning glory on a fabulous outfit and contain all your necessities. In my opinion there are 5 handbags that every women should have. I, myself am in the process of rooting through mine and replacing all my old bargain purchases with good quality investment bags that will last me many year to come.

Black
The quintessential bag. Every women should own a staple black bag in my opinion. It is the "backbone" of one's handbag collection. Versatile and classic this should be a design that you adore. I myself am rather partial to a more relaxed handbag and being short petite, I look for a medium sized bag so as not overpower my frame.

Brown
Brown is a nice alternative to black and a chance to mix it up a bit. I am partial to a sold chocolate brown with few details as I think it can look cheap. The brown bag I have at the moment has a "snake skin" texture to it which I must admit is not usually my style but because of the dark colour it isn't glaringly obvious and had depth to the look.

White
I am a sucker for a fabulous soft white handbag and love it even more when the interior lining is something fun. My favourite bag ever was a soft white slouchy style bag with a fabulous purple interior. I am at the moment searching for my ultimate white bag and am hopeful as white is a big trend this summer.

Tan
I love the look of a tan handbag and think that a simple outfit of a white tank, jeans, gladiator sandals and a tan bag is one of my favourite looks. Its different from the black and brown as it tones things down a bit and gives a more relaxed feel and can be used in a more casual ensemble. I am still on the search for the perfect tan addition to my happy family of bags, and am currently lusting after a tan tote a friend recently bought home from a trip to France.

Metallic
I love the look of a metallic bag. In my opinion it just lifts the look of an outfit to another level. It ads so much fun to an outfit and goes with virtually anything. In my post covering the latest Spring trends: SpRiNg HaS sPrUnG I spoke about metallics and how I intended to incorporate the look into my wardrobe via a fabulous bag. I am happy to report that I have infact found said bag, the down side is, is that it is a little pricey but I think Im just going to go crazy and get it because I just love it.

Extra
Colour
Because you can never to prepared its always a good idea to have a bag in a fabulous colour. Anything you choose. It can be in a colour you always wear, or your favourite colour or simply something that you saw and loved just because of the way it looked. The choice is yours. Feel inspired and have some fun. I, myself have a fabulous red bag that i wip out to add spice and pizazz to a casual look. It is always encouraged to have more than one colour so go crazy and add a few pops of colour to your collection.

What is your go to handbag? Do you have one specific bag that you live out of or do you have a collection? How many bags do you have? And what do you think every women should have in their collect? Comment away!

What do you keep your make up in?

I am one of those people who love bright colours, stars, stripes and polka dot patterns and believe that every purchase you make is reflection of you. Like a handbag, a wallet should be chosen with just as much time and thought and should be something that you absolutely love. As should your cosmetic, toiletry bags and luggage. So, I found this really fun article republish here:

Cosmetic bags are a must-have item for anyone who wears makeup. Many people use their cosmetic bag on a daily basis to hold their makeup. Others only bring out the cosmetic case when they are planning on traveling or taking an overnight trip. Whatever your situation is, your cosmetic bag should be a statement of who you are, on the inside. Are you bold? Are your flirty? Are you practical? Your choice of cosmetic case will reveal it all.

The Types of Cosmetic Bags
Cosmetic bags are literally any type of case that can hold your makeup. Some are designed with set pockets and holders for the various makeup products. Others are simply an open compartment where you can stick all the products that you need. A cosmetic bag can say a lot about you, even if you are one of the only people who will ever see it. Many people choose a cosmetic bag that is a little more fun and flirty than a regular purse. Crazy designs, flowers and bright colors are all popular. However, cosmetic bags come in a variety of design, styles, materials and color for literally every taste.Try to find one that is not only practical, but also suited to your style.

Think about your Current Travel Situation
With your job or lifestyle do you have to travel often? Moving back between home and school on the weekends or holidays? Are you constantly packing your makeup around and toting it out and about? Many people do. In fact, because our lives continue to get busier and busier, often it is easiest to simply bring you cosmetic bag with you, wherever you go. If this is the case, then a small cosmetic bag is of utmost importance. Try to find one that fits in your purse or bag but can hold some of the essentials such as lipstick, foundation, mascara and eye liner.
Hey Big Spender
Sure, a cosmetic bag is not going to be the most important item you buy this season, but this does not mean you should go out and grab any bargain bag for your cosmetic bag. You want to ensure that your cosmetic bag is going to hold out no matter what situation you are in.

How to save and where to bank

So, as mentioned before saving is an important aspect of managing your money. There are different ways to save and there are different savings plans to consider.

Here are two savings plans to consider:
  1. Time-based savings plans - this is a great plan if you would like to achieve a monetary goal by a specific date. Take the total amount which you are aiming to save and divide it by the amount of time in which  you wish to achieve the goal and you will see how much you need to save each month to reach your goal.
  2. "Percentage of earnings" savings plans - in this plan you decide what percentage of your income/allowance you can afford to save.
Two very important concepts that you need to be aware of when saving are:

 Interest
This is the percentage of money that you earn on having your savings in the bank. This is a very valuble concept and is what helps the rich get richer. You will have the opportunity to be earning two different types of interest rates on your cash. The first is simple interest and is the rate of interest the bank will quote you on for having your money in their account for a fixed period of time. The second is called compound interest and is your biggest friend. This is when you have for example saved R1000 for a year and earned R120 in simple interest, you then leaving the money in the same account and you earn more interest, instead this time you are earning interest on R1120, thus you are earning interest on your interest - this is called compound interest.

Inflation
This is the opposite of compound interest and is your enemy. Basically, inflation is the increase in prices of products and services over fixed periods of time.

So when you start saving money in the long term you need to be able to realistically calculate the growth of your money and this is called "real rate" of growth. You can calculate it by subtracting the inflation rate from the interest rate you are earning.

Once you have decided what type of savings plan is best for you and have worked out how to calculate your "real growth" rate you need to find a suitable bank with which to save your money. Its always best to do a little research to find the best bank for you. One way to do this is by means of a chart. Across the top list the banks you have to choose from and own the side list the following  services: Account Name, Interest Rate, Minimum balance, ATM charge, Other ATM usage charge, Monthly charge, Deposit charge, Cash deposit charge, Any other charge and No of withdrawals allowed a month. This will give you an excellent idea on which is the best place for you. You would be suprised how much money you can save on bank charges alone.

It is a good idea to have two accounts, one where yu have your everyday money that you use for your expenses and another where you keep your savings. Its very useful to have these accounts linked for easy transfers. It also makes spending your savings less tempting, especially if you leave your other card safely at home. But do keep in mind the fancier the account and the more services it offers the higher your bank charges will be.

What are your saving tips? What long term goals are you saving for? Leave a comment and I would love to know :)

PROJECT 365

I've always loved taking photo's simply for the fun factor and that you can then have those memories forever. I love having photo's to show for all the fun times. I have recently however stopped taking photo's as much which is not a good thing. But then today I discovered PROJECT 365 - basically what it is, is a type of social networking site but instead of updating your status you upload one photo for everyday of the year and at the end you have a year in your life in photo's :)

I personally think its a fab idea and can't wait to get started. Its really going to push me to start taking photo's again and what an awesome keepsake to have, your year photo by photo so you don't forget a day.

I have 10 invites to give away to the first 10 readers who post a comment here asking to be invited. Simply leave your email address and don't forget to add me as a friend when you join!

Travel Must Haves

Flying anywhere overseas from South Africa can an excutiatingly long flight. When I went overseas for the first time I was in the air for 20 hrs. As such I have learnt that there are certain "must have items" that are necessary for a comfotable journey.

1.) Facial wipes - they are multifunction, easy to use and refreshing.

2.) Neck pillow - but not just any one. The one that I swear by takes up more space then your average blow up one but is so worth it. The one side of it is "swollen" so that your head can actually fall and rest to one side comfotably as opposed to flop from side to side as you fall asleep.

3.) Sandals - for a long flight its so much more comfotable to be wearing open shoes and also eliminates the odour factor of taking of closed shoes. Also, if you are flying to the United States you are required to remove your shoes at security check points and sandals thatyou can slip off make life so much easier.

4.) Money belt - while not very attract they are very functional when it comes to keeping your money and passport safe while you sleep on the plane. I have a slim travel one and what I normally do is carry it in my carry on until I am on the plane then discreetly slide it on under my top so that when I fall asleep I know everything is safe. Also should anything happen to my carry on I'm not stranded.

5.) Pashmina - these are multifunctional and really useful to have. The can double as a shawl or light weight blanket or scarf for when you reach your destination if it is chilly.

6.) Sudoku - I am a huge fan of sudoku and it actually hapened when i purchase one at an airport shop to keep me busy on the plane. I've been an addict ever since. Great for when you can't sleep or are tired of watching movies.

7.) Book/journal - reading and writing are also great things to do on a plane to pass the time and i always carry both so that I have options.

8.) Location - whilst window seats definately have their upsides on a flight of 20 hrs you are better off on an isle seat. You can get up and go to the bathroom without disturbing anyone, you can reach into the stow away compartment to get any itens you need and you can simply get up to strech your legs at any point during the flight.

These are are a few of my tried and tested airplane must have, what are yours? Got any tips or tricks on how to make a long flight more comfortable? Do Share!

My Handbag essentials

I'm quite a curious person and the group "What's in your bag" on flickr is always an interesting persual. While the contents of each womens bag is as varied and different as the person themselves I think that there are a few essential items that are useful on the go.

Wallet
This of course is the most essential item. It carries your cash, cards, driver's license and possibly your ID. You can also keep your reciepts and other important notes. I, myself love wallets and think the process of finding a wallet is as important as finding the perfect handbag. I bought mine overseas in Florida. Its a fabulous turquiose, genuine leather fossil wallet with white stitching and I love it. If Tom Flisha was to "Dress my nest" I would use is one of my style items, that is how much it reprents me.

Keys
Never go anywhere without your keys. Its always very important to make sure you know where your keys are. There is nothing worse that loosing them. On a positve note, keys give you the opportunity to fun and funky with key chain. I love having intersting and fun key chains and its another reflection if your personality.

Cellphone
Always have a charged phone with plenty of airtime in case of emergencies. Keeping in touch is very important and what better way to do so than an sms. You never know when someone will be looking for you.

Makeup
Touch ups through out the day are always necessary and I have a small black mesh makeup bag that I carry around with the essentials like mascara and lip gloss.

Hand cream
One of my pet peeves is having dry hands. i can't stand it and so I always have to carry a large tub of body shop almond hand lotion. Nothing is worse than the feeling of having dry hands.

Contact lenses
Most of the time I wear my contact so I always carry a small travel sized container of solution, my contact lenses case as well as my glasses with me at all times just in case.

Sunglasses
Sunglasses are a must have in sunny weather especially if you drive. They also double as a fabulous fashion accessory and had pizazz to any outfit.

Sanitary wear
You never know when you might find yourself in an unexpected situation so I always important to carry a supply of pantyliner's, pad and tampons.

Painkillers
A very useful thing to have in case of cramps or unexpected headaches or other aches and pains. I often find myself getting in the summer from not drinking enough water.

Notebook and pen
I like to be organised and am always making lists of errands and things that need doing so I never leave the house without my moleskin notebook and pen which was a birthday present. I love the fact that it has an elastic band around it which allows me to keep extra notes and loose pieces of paper inside.

Camera
I love photos. Lately my passion for taking photo's has dwindled slightly but I am determined to start again. I like to document my life's journey.

Pepper spray
I always carry pepper spray with me wherever I go. I often find myself out and about in the evening alone walking home or even going to do errands during the day and I'm never without it. When I was in Canada I was quite suprised to learn that pepper spray is illegal.

Umbrella
As beautiful as Cape Town is the weather is a nightmare in terms of consistency. You could have all four seasons in one day.  Therefore it is very important to be prepared.

What do you carry in your bag? What are your essential can't leave home without items?

Have an inspirational day :)
